Defeating Illegal
Dumping
One sheriff’s office in North Texas developed
a community outreach program to educate
county residents on illegal dumping. Department
personnel gave presentations on the topic to
community organizations, schools and commercial
groups such as builders associations. Additionally,
officers performed “block walks,” canvassing
neighborhoods near known dumping sites to
educate residents and deliver promotional products
as message reminders—magnets, litter bags and
bumper stickers were handed out to individuals
who participated in the presentations.
