Smart Smartphone Etiquette

PPAI Editor Tina Berres Filipski’s

Perspectives column in the July issue of

PPB

discussed etiquette surrounding smartphone

use in the business environment. Drawing

on research from USC’s Marshall School of

Business, the column explored how smart-

phone use is accepted and what committing

cellular faux pas says about you.

That technological piece could be the

best and worst gadget we carry. You are

spot-on with the observation. I am

always amazed at what I see people doing

when they should be paying attention to

those right in front of them. I even feel

guilty if I take notes in my phone using

Evernote during a meeting. The percep-

tion is what people remember.

At lunch today I was reading your

Perspectives article in the July

PPB

mag-

azine about use of smartphones during

meetings and I would ask you to email

me an electronic file of this article. A

pdf would be great.

Although you were addressing the

problem at business meetings in our

industry, I have another use for this

article. I want to email it to all my fel-

low regional school committee mem-

bers and the administrators who attend

our biweekly meetings. The use of

smartphones at these meetings has

become a major distraction for all of

the reasons you mention and quote in

this article.

I have been trying to figure out how

to gain more credibility on LinkedIn

Pulse posts. I have been advised not to

do any hard selling but rather educate

and entertain. I think your Perspectives

article about “What Smartphone Use

Really Says About You” is phenomenal

and I was surprised at all the statistics—

the research on Millennials did not sur-

prise me at all.

I would like to post your article on

LinkedIn’s Pulse posts.
