IN 2005, YOUTUBE CO-FOUNDER

Steve Chen became the first person ever to

upload a cat video. His 30-second clip fea-

tured his cat playing with a rope. But the

first cat video to reach ‘viral’ status wasn’t

uploaded until a year later. That clip, titled

“Puppy vs. Cat”, featured a feline that kept

its cool during an onslaught of curious puppies.

Since then, videos of pets doing petlike—and un-petlike—things are a wild-

ly popular category on the user-driven site. Youtube’s most watched video of

2014 was the Polish-made clip,

“Mutant Giant Spider Dog.”

Other fan favorites? A cat riding

a Roomba vacuum while dressed

as a shark, a German shepherd

attacking his shadow, and a cat

jumping through a snowbank.

EVENING GOWNS AND ACCEPTANCE SPEECHES are the

focus of the Academy Awards every February, but the

American Humane Association honors a different sort of star

with its annual PAWSCARS ceremony. Categories ranging

from Best Supporting Equine to Best Magical Cow recog-
