Product safety is of critical
importance to the industry. Buying
apparel items in the U.S. makes it
easier to ensure compliance with
safety standards outlined in the
Consumer Product Safety
Improvement Act (CPSIA).
American-made apparel is often
more environmentally and socially
responsible, too, with attention paid
to workers’ safety and pollution
prevention.
For these reasons and more, a large
number of companies are reshoring, or
bringing back apparel production to the
U.S. from overseas. According to the
2014 A.T. Kearney Reshoring Index, of
the top three reshoring industries,
apparel manufacturing is No. 3, with 12
percent of production—formerly
thought to be permanently lost—return-
ing to the States.
