Closing The Door To Scammers

PPB

’s May issue Management column

asked “Are You The Next Victim? By

PPB

Editor Tina Berres Filipski. The column

examined scams that industry professionals

may come across and gave tips on how to

spot them and how to readers can protect

themselves.

This article reads as if it were writ-

ten based on my exact experience last

September. In my situation, I contacted

my Secretary of State’s office here in

Georgia and an investigation was

opened, as well as a police investigation

by the Athens/Clarke Police

Department. To this day, nothing has

been resolved.

Georgia has no password protection

on the registration site but they have the

same policy Kentucky has for emailing

any action taken regarding the company.

The problem is that the crooks simply

enter their email address as well as yours

and, as in the article, they can then go

back and change the information swiftly

in hopes that it will not be detected.

Because I was told by the investiga-

tor at the SoS office that this was a

problem that would require a legislative

action to change the circumstances, I

also contacted my local state represen-

tative, who happens to own a business

as well, and he was shocked that this

could happen.

As I understand it, this is a very

simple problem to fix if we can just

rally our legislative arm to make the

change in the corporate “open-access”

law that would close this backdoor to

our businesses.
