EpiHab began in 1958 as a nonprofit whose mission is to “provide meaningful employment to those with epilepsy and other disabilities in a safe and enjoyable environment.” EpiHab was awarded a federal grant to open, and we have been providing “hand labor” ever since. What led your company to enter the promotional products market? In 1958, our first contract was with Motorola, where we served as a woodshop that built the large wooden shipping containers to send the supercomputers to NASA. By the ’70s, computers got smaller, and we had to pivot the services we provided. We partnered with the Printing Industry of Arizona and provided hand collation services to the majority of commercial printers in Arizona. For example, if someone wanted 500 threering binders with 10 tabs/chapters, we would hand collate and assemble them because there was no such thing yet as a digital press that could print them out in collated sets. By the mid-’90s, digital printing entered the market, and we pivoted again. We began doing hand assembly of products, labeling, bagging, kitting and fulfillment. This brought us into the promotional market as a business services provider. This is the cornerstone of the services we provide to the business community today. What’s your favorite thing about being in the promotional products industry? Our favorite thing about being in the promotional products industry as a business services provider is that there is no job that is too big or too small. EpiHab’s success has been a result of finding ways to say 'yes' to our customers. We are constantly evolving and offering services that we have not offered before because a customer needs them. Why did you join PPAI? We have been members of the local Arizona Promotional Products Association (AZPPA) chapter for a while, but we felt it was time to spread our wings and show the country how we can partner with promotional products companies and they can practice social responsibility by working with a nonprofit like EpiHab. It is a win-win. We are overflow providers for many promotional products companies that handle their own fulfillment, and we wanted to expand our reach.
