By Ellen Tucker, MAS, CAE COLLABORATION, a leadership and organizational culture that I am deeply passionate about, often carries the deceptive perception of being simple to achieve. Let’s face it, fostering and achieving a truly collaborative culture within an organization is difficult. However, the rewards of leading with collaboration are immense. Through embracing and nurturing a collaborative environment, you as a leader enhance the overall performance and culture of your organization, empower your leaders and their teams and drive long-term, sustainable success. How To Build Collaboration The importance of incorporating diverse voices and perspectives should always be a part of the foundation of any collaborative culture. For organizations, teams and projects led by leaders who value varied viewpoints, the initial step of creating a space for these to be heard is increasingly happening cross-departmentally and includes people with different backgrounds and experiences. It’s the more challenging yet crucial next step of ensuring that these voices and perspectives have the ability and power to influence the decision that happens less often and less consistently. This step requires leaders to move beyond merely hearing different perspectives to genuinely incorporating them into the decisionmaking process. It means taking the time to detach from their instinctual biases and allowing decisions to be shaped by collective insights. 22 • SEPTEMBER 2024 • PPAI
